A study was commissioned to look at new ways of controlling knotweed using a cut and injection method, directly into the hollow stem. The study also compared a variety of herbicides known to have been successful in controlling knotweed using the traditional foliar spray methods and looked at the optimum concentration, timing and application technique. It also investigated the effect on the surrounding ground flora and shrubs/trees. Results of the study indicate that the cut and inject method had several advantages over foliar spray: it required only one visit per year, the follow up treatment involved spot spraying of new regrowth (too small for the cut and inject method); could be used in windy conditions and although desigend for use in areas of high conservation value, could be used in any situation.
