Interim profile, incomplete information
Location Specific Impacts:Ascension Is. (Saint Helena) Disease transmission: Prosopis juliflora may also support a reservoir of pests, parasites and predators of native species (Pickup, 1999 in Varnham, 2006). Interaction with other invasive species: Prosopis juliflora may also encourages rats by providing a year-round food source (seeds and flowers) and increased nest sites (Pickup, 1999 in Varnham, 2006). Reduction in native biodiversity: The fast growth rate of Prosopis juliflora allows it to outcompete native plant species (George and White, 2003 in Varnham, 2006). Threat to endangered species: Prosopis juliflora affects native nesting turtles like the 'Endangered (EN)' green turtle (see Chelonia mydas in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species) by altering incubation temperature of sand and, by spreading on to beaches, reducing area of sand available for nesting (George and White, 2003 in Varnham, 2006). P. juliflora may pose a threat to breeding colonies of sooty terns (Sterna fuscata) if it spreads further (Hughes, 2004 in Varnham, 2006).
