General Impact
A pest in the Pacific, where it can become mixed with the kava (Piper methysticum) crop during harvesting, lowering its quality. Also competes with kava and other crops. May act as a host for kava pests and pathogens (Plant Protection Service, 2001).
Location Specific Impacts:Viti Levu Is. (Fiji) Agricultural: May become mixed with kava (Piper methysticum) during harvesting, lowering the quality of the kava. Competition: Outcompetes other plants, including kava (Piper methysticum). Disease transmission: Although not proven, it is believed that P. aduncum has the potential to act as an alternate host for pathogens of kava (P. methysticum). Economic/Livelihoods: Competition and mixing with harvested kava (Piper methysticum) has the potential to affect export earnings from this product. Panama Competition: Outcompetes other plant species.
