福壽螺原產於南美洲，之後在一九八○年左右引進東南亞計畫作為當地/外銷食物資源之一。然而，市場發展不如預期； 大部分個體因此被釋放或自行逃離，成為東南亞的許多國家稻米作物的嚴重害蟲。在菲律賓已造成巨大的經濟損失，並被列為稻米害蟲榜首。一九八九年疑似由於類似經濟因素，自菲律賓引進夏威夷；同樣的情形再度發生。短時間內福壽螺即逃離或被蓄意釋放至野地，成為芋類的頭號害蟲。福壽螺可由農作區快速散佈至溼地及其他自然淡水環境中，造成嚴重衝擊。可能的影響包括對原生水生植物相的破壞進而改變原始棲地，或與當地原生螺類等水生動物互相競爭。在東南亞，福壽螺已導致原生的皮拉蘋果螺(Pila apple snails)數量銳減。而菲律賓境內為此採取行動，開始使用殺蟲劑企圖消滅牠們。目前，生態環境模擬預測(Climatic modeling)的結果顯示，福壽螺可能會散佈至世界上許多至今尚未受干擾的地方，特別是印度稻米密集的農作區。而在美國也已可見福壽螺的蹤跡，並對德州及加州的主要稻米栽種區造成威脅。現今澳洲的情形格外令人擔憂，因其可能產生福壽螺遷徙至自然溼地(如卡卡都Kakadu)或稻米農作區之虞。
