福寿螺原产于南美洲，之后在一九八○年左右引进东南亚计划作为当地/外销食物资源之一。然而，市场发展不如预期； 大部分个体因此被释放或自行逃离，成为东南亚的许多国家稻米作物的严重害虫。在菲律宾已造成巨大的经济损失，并被列为稻米害虫榜首。一九八九年疑似由于类似经济因素，自菲律宾引进夏威夷；同样的情形再度发生。短时间内福寿螺即逃离或被蓄意释放至野地，成为芋类的头号害虫。福寿螺可由农作区快速散布至湿地及其它自然淡水环境中，造成严重冲击。可能的影响包括对原生水生植物相的破坏进而改变原始栖地，或与当地原生螺类等水生动物互相竞争。在东南亚，福寿螺已导致原生的皮拉苹果螺（Pila apple snails）数量锐减。而菲律宾境内为此采取行动，开始使用杀虫剂企图消灭牠们。目前，生态环境模拟预测（Climatic modeling）的结果显示，福寿螺可能会散布至世界上许多至今尚未受干扰的地方，特别是印度稻米密集的农作区。而在美国也已可见福寿螺的踪迹，并对德州及加州的主要稻米栽种区造成威胁。现今澳洲的情形格外令人担忧，因其可能产生福寿螺迁徙至自然湿地(如卡卡都Kakadu)或稻米农作区之虞。
