Common names: acacia à gomme (French), gommier rouge (French), gum arabic tree (English), prickly acacia Organism type: tree Acacia nilotica is a small tree 4 to 5 metres tall that was initially introduced to tropical areas for shading and forage. It forms dense stands that limit access to water for livestock, diminish the quality of pasture and compete with native plants. Acacia nilotica is regarded in Australia as a pest plant of national importance. Occurs in: natural forests, range/grasslands, ruderal/disturbed Geographical range Native range: Africa and western Asia (PIER, 2006) Known introduced range: New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Solomon Islands, Australia, Indonesia, Mauritius Island, (PIER, 2006).
