         Interim profile, incomplete information
Taxonomic name: Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) Gray
    Synonyms: Mirasolia diversifolia Hemsl
Common names: fleur la fête des mères (French-Reunion (La Réunion)), Japanese sunflower (English), Mexican sunflower (English), shrub sunflower (English), sunflower (English), tree marigold (English)
    Organism type: shrub
Tithonia diversifolia is an herbaceous stoloniferous perennial which can reach 2 to 3m high. Originally from Mexico and Central America, it is planted and cultivated in many countries for its beautiful tall flowers. Tithonia diversifolia tolerates heat and drought and can rapidly form large herbaceous shrubs. Naturalised in some Pacific islands, it is found along roadsides and in disturbed areas. Rapid vegetative reproduction and significant production of lightweight seeds allow Tithonia diversifolia to quickly invade disturbed habitats. In forming dense stands, it prevents the growth of young native plants. Tithonia diversifolia is invasive in some parts of Africa and Australia and in many Pacific islands.
    Occurs in:
    ruderal/disturbed
    Geographical range
Native range: Mexico and Central America.
Known introduced range: Introduced to many Pacific islands (Hawaii, Guam, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Palau, etc.) and some Indian Ocean islands (Christmas Island, La Réunion and Mauritius) (PIER, 2007).
