It is very vigorous and can be spread by rhizomes and become invasive. It is one of the major invasive plants in Hawaii and La Réunion, where it can become dominant or co-dominant in natural or semi-natural environments and compete with native species. Occurs in: agricultural areas, natural forests, planted forests, riparian zones, ruderal/disturbed, urban areas, wetlands Geographical range Native range: South America (Mexico to Venezuela; Chile and the Antilles). Known introduced range: La Réunion, New Zealand, Hawaii, Europe (PIER, 2006).
