Common names: Chinese violet (English), coromandel (English), Ganges primrose (English), herbe le rail (French-Reunion (La Réunion)), Philippine violet (English) Organism type: herb Asystasia gangetica is an ornamental herb native to India, Malaysia and Africa. With its ability to reproduce by vegetative propagation and form dense vegetation mats, this species can be highly invasive. It can smother any vegetation with its herbaceous layer. Its introduction to the Pacific Islands has caused major disruptions in native ecosystems. Occurs in: agricultural areas, natural forests, riparian zones, ruderal/disturbed, urban areas, wetlands Geographical range Native range: India, Malay Peninsula, Africa. Known introduced range: Asystasia gangetica has been introduced throughout the tropics and is now pantropical (PIER, 2006; Fournet, 2002).
