Long seen as an endemic in several Caribbean islands (Bahamas, Barbados and Guadeloupe), the recent discovery of its exotic origin means that this species represents a potential environmental threat to the biodiversity of the islands. Occurs in: agricultural areas, planted forests, riparian zones Geographical range Native range: Native to North America. Known introduced range: The raccoon has been introduced in several Caribbean islands and in parts of Asia and Europe and is now widely distributed (Nowak, 1991); Japan (Ikeda, Tohru (Research Group of Regional Science, Hokkaido University)., pers.comm February 2009).
