    Columba livia est originaire d'Europe et elle a été introduite dans le monde entier comme source de nourriture ou pour la chasse. Ces pigeons préfèrent vivre à proximité des habitats anthropisés, comme les cultures et les bâtiments. Ils causent des dommages considérables aux bâtiments et monuments avec leurs déjections corrosives. Ils posent aussi un risque pour la santé car ils sont capables de transmettre diverses maladies à l'homme, aux volailles d'élevage et aux espèces sauvages.
