Unpub 2001 Arrival Date: 1975 Introduction: Intentional Species Notes for this Location: Euglandina rosea was introduced at Paopao in 1975. Surveys were conducted in 1985, 1987 and 1991. Management Notes for this Location: It was believed that all seven native snail species of the Partula genus on Moorea were extinct by 1987. However, a small population of one species was located in 2001 by Jean-Yves Meyer of the French Polynesian Research Department. Five species survive in captivity. Attempts are being made through the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for the captive breeding of those stocks that remain in the laboratory (Murray et al 1988) Location Notes: Impacts: Predation: Partula spp. of Moorea have for more than a century provided a natural laboratory for the study of variation, genetic polymorphism and speciation. As a result of the introduction of E. rosea, all the species of Partula from Moorea are now believed to be extinct in the wild. Since E. rosea is spreading rapidly on Tahiti, the demise of Partula on that island also is imminent (Murray et al 1988). Last Modified: 28/10/2005
