Populations of the American bullfrog have been reported from Belgium from several sites in Wallonia and from Flanders (Santos-Barrera et al. 2009). Free-ranging reproducing populations of the frog are established in the country (Ficetola et al. 2007a; Jooris 2005, in Scalera 2007), including at Balen (introduced between 1990 and 1992) (Ficetola et al. 2007a). The bullfrog inhabits slow running waters, permanent ponds and ditches with dense vegetation; in Belgium, it is often found in fish ponds (Etienne et al. 2007).
Education and Awareness: One of the actions taken in Belgium in response to the threats of Invasive alien species includes the publishing of a brochure directed to the general public on Prunus serotina, Eutamias sibiricus, Rana catasbeiana, red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans), Hydrocotyle ranunculoides, and rhododendrons at the end of 2000 (Group of experts on Invasive Alien Species 2005). For information on the invasive American bullfrog in the Dutch language please see Hyla: stierkikker.
