    The first know occurrence of 'nuisance blooms' of Didymosphenia geminata have been reported from Chile. The newly discovered blooms were reported by a U.S Geological Survey scientist and diatom expert, on the remote Chilean rivers of Rio Espolon and Rio Futaleufú, near Esquel, Argentina, covering a total of more than 56 river kilometers. The presence of D. geminata was reported in Lago Sarmiento, Chile, in 1964. (USGS Newsroom 6/4/2010)
