    Smith et al. (2001) states that, "The climate in the Guanacaste region is characterized by a pronounced dry season that extends from December to March. Average yearly rainfall is 1,865 mm, and mean temperature is 28 C. There are typically three seasons per year: two crops (i.e., corn followed by either corn or beans) and a fallow dry season. The majority of low-resource farmers use a zero-tillage system; some till their fields once per year before the start of the first corn crop. Corn is planted in seed holes by hand using both local land races and commercial varieties or hybrids."
