At the time of the study (1980) feral pigs had been present on the island for over 140 years (now over 165 years). The impact of pigs on dune vegetation was assessed and found to be insignificant (Baron 1980, in Wolf and Conover 2003). Habiats that the pigs rooted in included wet grassland, dry grassland and pine savanna (Baron 1980, in Wolf and Conover 2003). On Horn Island (Mississippi) hogs take advantage of high seasonal abundances of insects, crabs and dead fish (Baron 1982, in Wolf and Conover 2003).
