Details of this species in India Status: Alien Invasiveness: Invasive Occurrence: Established Source: Mishra et al. 2004 Arrival Date: Introduction: Species Notes for this Location:
Management Notes for this Location: Management options suggested by the authors include supplemental feeding for the the mountain ungulate bharal Pseudois nayaur both during the lean season of forage availability (winter) and during the high productivity season (summer) when forage competition is high. The authors go on to suggest that a reduction in livestock density and the identification of areas for wildlife conservation and maintaining these areas livestock free will have direct positive impact on bharal population. Impacts: Competition: Results of a study in the high altitude Spiti Valley, Indian Trans-Himalaya, on the competition between seven species of livestock (Equus asinus being one of the seven) and the wild herbivore, the mountain ungulate bharal Pseudois nayaur showed that there is dietry overlap among these herbivore species. The study concluded that this high diet overlap between livestock and bharal, together with density-dependent forage limitation, results in resource competition and a decline in bharal density.
