    In 1990 the zebra mussel was reported from brackish water in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland after being present for 150 years in the nearby freshwater Lake Ladoga (Gollasch & Leppäkoski 1999, Minchin et al. 2002, in Birnbaum 2006). The zebra mussel was first recorded in Finland in 1995 (DAISIE 2006). It is accidentally dispersed via floating structures, ballast water or sediments in tanks (DAISIE 2006). According to the North European and Baltic Network on Invasive Alien Species (NOBANIS) database (2009) the zebra mussel is locally common in estuaries and brackish areas and is described as invasive in Finland.
