Details of this species in Finland Status: Alien Invasiveness: Invasive Occurrence: Established Source: Antsulevich et al, 2003 Arrival Date: Introduction: Species Notes for this Location: Dreissena polymorpha is dispersed along the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland from the St. Petersburg defensive barrier region of the town of Kronstadt in the east to the Pellinki Archipelago in the west; along the southern coast they are rather common from Koporsky Bay in the east to Narva Bay in the west. Additionally, they were found at nearly every island, both Russian and Finnish, situated in the open area of the gulf (Antsulevich et al, 2003). Management Notes for this Location:
Impacts: Competition: Competitive effects on other species due to the zebra mussel have been recorded in Finland (NOBANIS 2009). Ecosystem change: Dreissena polymorpha facilitates and may even be the main cause of rapid growth of filamentous algae in the Neva estuary of Finland; this algae has become a serious environmental problem (Golubkov et al, 2003).
