Details of this species in Kaua`i Is. Status: Alien Invasiveness: Invasive Occurrence: Established Source: Conant and Nagai 1998, HISC 2008 Arrival Date: Around 1985 Introduction: Species Notes for this Location: Miconia calvescens occurs in Waialua State Park and Homestead area of Kauai. Miconia was discovered on Kauai in 1995, having been introduced about 1985, and an eradication/containment effort was initiated soon afterward (Conant and Nagai 1998). Management Notes for this Location: The current management goal on Kauai Island is eradication, through detection and removal of potential fruiting trees through surveillance in nearly 1,400 ha, by foot or helicopter. The Kauai Invasive Species Committee (KISC) had not seen a fruiting tree from December 2004 to November 2009; however, several fruiting trees were detected and treated in late 2009 (K. Gunderson, KISC, pers. comm. to L. Loope, 2010). Impacts: Agricultural: M. calvescens threatens industry and agriculture because it causes soil erosion with possibility of landslides. Soil erosion causes approximately 3% to 31% decreases in the yield depending on the type of crops (Chan-Halbrendt et al. 2007). Reduction in native biodiversity: M. calvescens reduces biodiverstiy in Hawaii by displacing and excluding native plants and altering forest ecosytems (Chan-Halbrendt et al. 2007) Last Modified: 29/06/2010 1:23:00 p.m.
