    Species Notes for this Location:
Unsuccessful outbreaks of ship rats (Rattus rattus) have occurred in Arizona since the late 1800s. The latest outbreak occurred in Phoenix, Arizona in 2001. The desert surrounding Phoenix is formidable to rats, but residential and urban development has probably altered the habitat sufficiently to make it suitable for R. rattus.
    Management Notes for this Location:
Community and government campaigns in Arizona are working to suppress rat populations, although it is unknown if these efforts will be sufficient to eradicate rats from the area.
