Target species for eradication include Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus), ship rats (Rattus rattus), cats (Felis catus) and mice (Mus musculus). Notes sur la localité: Kayangel (112 hectares) is an island in the Republic of Palau (Micronesia) in the western Pacific. The atoll is home to Palau’s largest and most dense population of the endangered Micronesian megapode (see Megapodius laperouse in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species), the Marianas flying fox (see Pteropus mariannus in IUCN Red List of Threatened species), the green turtle (see Chelonia mydas in IUCN Red List of Threatened species) and the hawksbill turtle (see Eretmochelys imbricata in IUCN Red List of Threatened species). The main threat to terrestrial biodiversity on the islands comes from invasive species. Impacts: Économique/Subsistance: Ship rats are causing economic losses by damaging crops including papaya and corn. Transmission de maladie: Ship rats are known to affect community health in Palau by acting as disease vectors, exposing citizens to gastrointestinal illnesses and leptospirosis through water supplies.
