    The largest alang-alang grasslands are found in the interior of the island of Borneo, on former dipterocarp forest soils. A frequently cited though not accurate figure fro Indonesia alone is 200 000km² with an annual increase of 150 000ha (Soerjani 1970, Anon 1990, in Jussi et al. 1995).
