Reduction in native biodiversity: Several authors believe that the two rat species, Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus and the mongoose (Herpestes javanicus) contributed to the disappearance or the extinction of various species of lizards, snakes, birds and mammals in the Lesser Antilles (in Lorvelec et al., 2001).
