    Reported in 2009 to have been "introduced within the last few years" (Manco pers. comm.; in Varnham, 2006), Maconellicoccus hirsutus has apparently killed off the majority of the ornamental Hibiscus rosa-sinensis but has yet to spread to native Hibiscus species or other Malvaceae (Varnham, 2006).
