Commonly cultivated ornamental in Hawai‘i in mesic to wet areas" (Motooka et al. 2003). Bamboo "is said to be one of the 'canoe plants' brought to Hawai`i Nei by early Polynesian settlers in their oceanic navigation" (see: http://www.canoeplants.com/ohe.html) Management Notes for this Location: Management: Difficult. Best to cut down and spray the regrowth. In forests and other non-cropland, imazapyr or glyphosate plus fluazifop are effective (J. DeFrank, Univ. Hawai‘i).
