It is thought that cane toads were able to colonise Nonsuch Island, after a freshwater pond had been constructed there, by swimming across a 600 m sea gap. There is concern that toads may compete with the endemic Bermuda petrel (Pterodroma cahow).
A fence may be constructed around the pond on Nonsuch Island to exclude toads from using it to breed.
Nonsuch Island is designated a 'Living Museum' Nature Reserve.
