A quick identification aid is that any water plant with white, ball-shaped flowers is likely to be a weed, either G. spilanthoides or the alligator weed Alternanthera philoxeroides. G. spilanthoides has serrated leaf edges whereas alligator weed has rounded leaf edges (The Department of the Environment and Heritage, 2003).
