    The Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission (2003) states that, "H. nobilis and Hypophthalmichthys molitrix are very similar, but can be distinguished by H. nobilis having a shorter ventral keel extending from the vent only to the pelvic fin base. In addition H. nobilis possess numerous, small irregular black blotches distributed along their sides."
