    Alosa aestivalis

Bean (2002) states that the only definable difference is the color of the peritoneum in the two species. "The abdominal cavity in the blueback herring (Alosa aestivalis) is much darker, almost black, whereas A. pseudoharengus has a paler abdominal cavity with some black spots. A. pseudoharengus also tends to have larger eyes, and blueback herrings have more 'compressed' bodies." Blueback herring moved through canal system to Lake Ontario, easternmost Great Lake, but did not establish reproducing population. Blueback herring have established populations in some landlocked waterbodies in southern United States (Owens et al. 1998)
