    Passiflora tripartita

    P. tripartita var. mollisssima is often confused with P. tarminiana, as they both used to be classed as the same species. P. mollissima does not occur on Hawaii however, and there are a number of differences between the two species. P. tarminiana has flowers in which the sepals and petals open flat, or are reflexed back, as well as sepals that are close to the length of the floral tube. P. mollissima has flowers that never open to more than a bell-shape and sepals that are much shorter than the floral tube. (Irvine, 2003). Other botanical varieties of P. tripartita have become naturalized in New Zealand (Heanan, P.B. & Sykes, 2003. Passiflora (Passifloraceae) in New Zealand: a revised key with notes on distribution, NZ J. Bot. 41:217-221)
