Demonstration Projects
The projects outlined are intended to showcase the ability of the Cooperative Islands Iniative to work with a range of stakeholders to achieve positive conservation outcomes.
“Demonstration Projects” are proposed as an important way to advance successful invasive species management, to raise awareness amongst island residents of the value and achievability of invasive species management and to develop in-country management capability.
The creation of Demonstration Projects is a key element of the Cooperative Islands Initiative. In addition to managing invasive species to achieve important biodiversity conservation outcomes, these projects will be selected and managed for the opportunities they present to raise awareness of IAS impacts and their management.
An important objective of Demonstration Projects will be to build management capability using operational projects as training programmes. Mechanisms will be developed whereby field practitioners may receive and hands-on training and experience of invasive species management approaches and techniques.
These projects will be selected in consultation with island countries, where management and training programmes are to be designed and mechanisms for engaging a range of decision makers and field practitioners will be developed. Inputs to the design of these projects will include the promotion of ecosystem restoration goals and the encouragement of on-going monitoring of a range of environmental variables.
