PACIFIC INVASIVES INITIATIVE

The "Pacific Invasives Initiative” (PII) of the Cooperative Islands Initiative was launched in 2004 following initial funding from the New Zealand Agency for International Development (NZAID) and the Pacific Conservation & Development Trust in 2002/2003. As at the meeting in Apia/Samoa in October 2005 seven partners have declared their intent to support the PII and to cooperate in its implementation.

PII partners

  • Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG)
  • Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP)
  • Secretariat for the Pacific Community (SPC)
  • Conservation International (CI)
  • Birdlife International (BI)
  • The Nature Conservancy (TNC)
  • New Zealand Agency for International Aid and Development (NZAID)
  • IUCN Regional Office for Oceania (IUCN)

The PII also works closely with collaborators such as the NZ Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Pacific Invasives Learning Network (PILN).

The goal of the PII is ‘ To conserve island biodiversity and enhance the sustainability of livelihoods of men, women and youth in the Pacific ’. This goal is being achieved through the objective of reducing negative impacts of invasive species primarily by managing them at selected Demonstration Projects in Pacific Island Countries and Territories. The fundamental role of the Demonstration Projects is to raise awareness of the negative effects of invasive species on biodiversity and people’s livelihoods, generate support for their management and improve the capacity of communities to manage invasive problems.

The main attributes of the PII are its network of partners, collective support and extensive resources. Key roles of the PII Coordinating Team (which is based at the University of Auckland) are to engage partners in PII projects and activities, to facilitate cooperative approaches to invasive species management and to promote wider involvement in this by communities, management agencies, partners and funders.
